“Wonderkid” tackles one of football’s most glaring issues – homophobia – through powerful storytelling. The film has now been released worldwide, available to watch online.
Wonderkid, written by Rhys Chapman, follows a young gay footballer and his inner struggle to find success while staying true to himself in what has historically been a hyper-masculine surrounding. The incredibly powerful piece of storytelling is a must-watch for anyone in the football community, especially we continue to embrace equality in all areas of the beautiful game.
The film features some familiar faces (and voices) including, Martin Tyler and Alan Smith. Storytelling aside, it is a beautifully shot film with an artistic, cinematic quality. The style and story work together to help portray such a serious issue in an accurate and compelling way. ‘Wonderkid’ is now part of a campaign to raise awareness about the lack of openly gay professionals in football while expressing its core message, it is ok to be yourself.
