This past weekend, Street Soccer USA hosted the annual NYC Cup–a premier street soccer tournament held under the bright lights of Times Square.
If you’re from New York, you know there are very few reasons to venture out into Times Square. With crowded sidewalks, over-priced chain restaurants and heckling Elmos, there is just very little desire to spend a day maneuvering through all of this. Enter Street Soccer USA, a reason to spend a Saturday in tourist country.
The day was full of excitement, with a full Youth tournament and Adult tournament, featuring local and international teams. Representatives from AFE, the Spanish player’s union, also played in the tournament with former Real Madrid and other professionals. Starting in 2018, the AFE and SSUSA will partner to provide a unique training program and coaching support.
It’s not often you get to play in front of hundreds of people in the middle of one of the most iconic blocks in New York City; it’s even better when it’s for a good cause. The NYC Cup, hosted by Street Soccer USA, is a 4-a-side tournament which benefits communities around the US through the beautiful game. In addition to bringing transportable fields to these communities, the organization also helps those complete rehabilitation, apply for jobs or graduate high school.
