Stanley Chow’s latest project celebrates iconic kits and players throughout the history of football. SOFC had the pleasure of speaking with Chow about how the illustration series came to be.
Each piece in Stanley Chow’s latest football-related project, appropriately named Stanley Chow FC, features a football legend and highlights special details from that particular era; everything from the hairstyles, kits, boots and facial hair. While every illustration follows the same standardized template, Chow makes each one unique with the use of color and strict attention to detail when it comes to the player’s personal style and club’s kit. The special thing about this project in particular is that each illustration can live independently from the rest of the series. However, by grouping several of the prints together, the repeating shapes really bring the collection to life.
SOFC had the honor of speaking with Stanley Chow about Stanley Chow FC and how he came up with the series. We discussed everything from inspiration, mustaches and United.
SOFC: How did the Stanley Chow FC project start? What was the inspiration behind it?
SC: The Stanley Chow FC came about accidentally really… I was illustrating a generic soccer player just for a bit of fun really. A friend of mine saw the illustration and suggested that if I added upturned collars to it, it may look a bit like Eric Cantona. It kind of worked and it opened a can of worms. Using the same template, I altered the strips and hairstyles to create other players. I then started creating my favourite strips and players throughout the history of soccer. I did about 30 or so players and have since opened the choosing of strips and players to the public to see what possibilities there could be.
SOFC: You’ve created quite a bit up to this point. Do you have a favorite print?
SC: My favourite print changes on a regular basis, but currently it’s probably Rudi Völler in the Germany 1990 World Cup kit. That Germany kit is my favourite football strip anyway, plus I always like illustrating people with moustaches.
SOFC: You seem to have a special gift for creating football-related illustrations. Can we expect any more football-related projects in the near future?
SC: At the moment I don’t have any plans for any football related projects. Purely because of the way I work, I don’t plan anything. I’m quite spontaneous in the way… The Stanley Chow FC project was conceived just before Christmas 2016, and I was keen to roll it as soon as possible in 2017.
SOFC: Wow you’ve really created a lot of illustrations in such a short amount of time. I couldn’t help but notice there are a lot of mustaches in your work. Coincidence?
SC: Well, I have a moustache myself… I’ve always been fond of moustaches… all my childhood heroes had moustaches.. starting with Magnum PI.
SOFC: Okay, last question. Do you have a favorite club?
SC: I’m a Manchester United season ticket holder… I’m fortunate enough to live a 10 minute walk from the stadium. But I try to follow as much football as possible anyway. However, United are my passion.
SOFC: That’s awesome. Thanks again, Stanley. Looking forward to seeing more from you soon!
