Philadelphia Union announced that they will begin accepting applications for the first-ever Chief Tattoo Officer.
The good folks in the marketing department at Philadelphia Union have some bold ideas up their sleeves. The Union has begun the search for a tattoo artist who will claim the title of Chief Tattoo Officer. As CTO of the Union, they will be the in charge of making sure players, staff and fans are properly inked.
At first glance, this seems like a PR stunt to build hype around the 2017 season. Maybe it is. Who cares though, because this is possibly one of the greatest things I’ve seen any organization do. This comes after the Union’s silly rap video for the launch of the club’s secondary kit. It’s good to see these are guys aren’t taking themselves too seriously.

The newly created position doesn’t seem so random when you take a closer look. Tattoos play a crucial role in sport and supporter culture. Like tattoos, supporting a club is a life decision. And finding a quality tattoo artist in a new city can be a daunting search. The announcement is a great move to further connect the club to the community and culture surrounding the team.
“This is an exciting initiative for all of us here at Philadelphia Union as we look to provide a revolutionary service for our players and front office, particularly those new to the area,” said Doug Vosik, Vice President of Marketing. “Our hiring process begins immediately; we are looking for a partner with a wide variety of talents and skills, and someone who can offer a broad range including American traditional, as well as Japanese, realism, new school and more.”
The position calls for someone with five years experience and the ability to do snake designs, because obviously. All of Philly will be covered in ink before the end of the season.
